Today’s workplace can be a place where groups and individuals thrive. It can also be a lonely place where people find themselves trying to get through the day. I think an important role everyone can play is taking the time to support the people around them. Saying good morning, asking people about something really interesting they did today, cancelling a meeting to take the time to listen to someone is who is having a bad day is just a shortlist of things we can do to make a difference.
Investing in each other is an important part of our daily work. It really does pay off when we need support, advice or “moment” to be human.
On the flip side, when we belittle, push and are simply not nice to people, we create a place where people survive instead of thriving.
I like this video from Christine Porath on Incivility. I think it makes a great point on the choice we have on how to conduct ourselves in the workplace.
Civility is more than company policy. It is that rich opportunity to take the time to be ourselves and seek the opportunity to bring the best out in other people.
